Reference. Film. Re-animating Buswell's Inscriptions

Re-animating Buswell's Inscriptions: One. By Will Patera
This series of animations results from research into the history of eye movement studies. The animations are made by taking data from Guy T. Buswell's book "How People Look at Pictures" (University of Chicago Press, 1935). Buswell captured the eye movements of subjects with an elaborate instrument that captured light reflected off of the subject's cornea onto moving vertical and horizontal photographic medium. The reflected light was recorded on the medium as dots that were made by a mechanical obstruction of the camera aperture by a fan (or tuning fork–in earlier instruments) rotating at 30 hertz. These points, gave Buswell insight into the space and time of the visual fixation patterns. The points were then re-inscribed onto the image shown to the subject, and accompanied by a fixation time table. This work reanimates Buswell's data–and perhaps reinscribes the subject.

Reference. Film. Kubrick // One-Point Perspective

Wes Anderson peers down from above, while Quentin Tarantino likes to peer up from below. Darren Aronofsky uses sharp sounds and Stanley Kubrick prefers the one-point perspective.

Reference. Film. Eyes Wide Shut. (1999)

From the movie 'eyes wide shut' by Stanley Kubrick, I am interested in the play of lighting and decoration. In every scene, there is a common theme to the interior lighting quality. For example, the Christmas light decorations and also the decorations in the Christmas tree. This gives the feeling of warmth and happiness contrasting to the plot, which the main character is isolated and sorrow from the inside while on the exterior, he seems perfect (rich and have a beautiful wife and family).

Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

In my opinion, the film success to impact us with powerful atmosphere that change according shot by shot. The story line quiet simple but include all the madness into just one night. The story start with some question in our mind. The hidden emotion that hide in the family that seem perfect. And it lead the doctor into the another secret world of emotion and passion then it happen to the wife too in form of dream.
The most powerful element of the film is the soundtrack, the piano massive piano sound always come with the silence scene. Without any special effect in the scene, the soundtrack depress our mind by just repeat 3-4 note in too the loop. And it come to its climax when the doctor saw his mask beside his wife.
The sound depress us and stop when it reach the scene that the doctor cry. It seem like soundtrack successfully reflect the emotion of the doctor. That why eyes wide shut not need to told us what happen in those night because it already kill us with its atmosphere.

The movie, eyes wide shut, strikes me as a highly addicted movie, especially in the context of our studio where we are studying "experience" and "atmosphere". Every scenes has special atmospheric quality to it and this was archived by flawless cinematographic works. If one looks carefully, every scenes is interesting in its own right, composition wise, color, light, movement, costume, acting, actors and actresses tone of voice, their facial expressions, their personality everything just added up to a very choragraphed and controlled experience. Either  or both the cinematographic works is alluring or the narrative, these goes on and on, one after the other. There are a a lot of fantasy, surrealism, alluring and delirious elements to be intrigued by. These elements are there as a transformative mechanism which help transport the audience to another world, a world of Stanley Kubrick.

The following snapshots are some many atmospheric qualities in the film.

I've never watched a film by Stanley Kubrick before and since this is the first film I watched by him, I would like to recommend it to people who is fond of intense experiential films where every little detail has been thoroughly thought and planned out. Personally, I find the movie exciting and actually very appealing since the movie engenders my curiosity throughout. I always find myself questioning what would happen next and etc. Somehow it is hard to foreshadow what would happen in this film. Personally, since the beginning of the film, I find it really odd how Kubrick introduces the character indirectly through their characteristics where they attend the event and both Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman were very peculiar in their behavior in terms of love affairs and etc. I find that scene very intriguing since it makes me wonder how their relationship is like. I like how in each scene there are the sound of the piano playing throughout because I think it matches with the holiday spirit that is carried throughout the movie. The music also sounds mysterious at times. The scene that I was intrigued by the most is the scene where Tom Cruise enters a private event in a large mansion. That scene gives me the feeling anxiety and suspense with great curiosity since even with all the characters wearing masks, it is difficult to tell their facial expression, but with their gestures and postures (and also the help of their mask expression), you can what each character is about. Somehow, you still understand the movie and know that something will definitely go wrong in that particular scene. Lastly, I also like how this movie has a psychological spin to it since the relationship between the two protagonist is extremely odd and sometimes confuses us audience. Overall, I enjoyed the movie and I look forward to more movies giving such intense experience as this one.

The film Eyes Wide Shut, created by Stanley Kubrick, is a compelling work that completely absorbs the audiences' minds into an artificial world that seems almost surreal. As to be expected of the master of precision, Kubrick's setting is composed of details that will take years to fragment them into pieces.

The film tells a story of a married couple who are lost in their battle of fantasy and struggling to keep their marriage alive. Slavoj Žižek claims that this is more than just a couple's fight, but it refers further into the comparison between men and women's minds. He explained that this movie is an illustration of a superiority of women's fantasy to men as the wife character explains her imagination in the beginning and the husband spends the entire film, trying to get close to that level of fantasy. So, without a clear distinction to indicate which scenes are real and which are fantasy, the film carried out in a beautiful ambiguity.

Techniques wise one thing that bothers me about, is the use of György Ligeti's piano cycle "Musica ricercata" that appears frequently to the point that instead of enhancing the atmosphere, it got distracting. But effective enough, the rest of the sound use in this film is effective in carrying out the tone of the movie.

Also, this video (http://vimeo.com/48425421#at=0) compiles Kubrick's frequent use of one point perspective from all of his movies which moreover adds to his perfection in his works.

What a movie!

The movie is the combination of sensuality, thriller and drama.
It is really hard to tell whether Bill Hartford( Tom Cruise) thought about Alice (Nicole Kidman), his wife, cheated on him with the officer is real or not because what he saw in his head is so real but she said she almost cheated on him. He lost himself  to the word she said. The setting was intense by the lighting. Most of the scenes are at night on the street. He took a long walk wandering around New York, more of wandering in his mind. Street light are dim like the mood of Bill.

The background noise is timing perfectly to raise the heartbeats and shifted emotionally through out the film. The way the main character are speaking is so slow and polite. Bill is hardly get emotional which is the opposite of Alice who seem to be overcome by her own desire.

The nude scene were put in an art ways. They were both and explanation of consequences of previous activities. For example, the first scene with the naked lady pass out by overdose of drug were referred back to the previous activities that she were doing.

The end of the movie is really unexpected. If the end were stopped at the scene where Bill found the mask on his bed, it would make more impact.
Some parts of the stories are foresee by the action of each character such as the girl that save Bill from the penalty.

A movie is full with what can be expected and unexpected at the same time.

‘Eye Wide shut’,

Firstly, I love the way that Stanley Kubrick uses the camera to shoot continually. (Without Cut) The best example would be the first screen where Bill and Alice were dressing up at their home. What I trying to say is the camera was following Bill (Tom cruise) to everywhere in his house. At this moment, we can see the space of each room without Cut and understand the movement of the character. I can see that he also use this technic with his other films. I think it is a good idea of how he challenges the space to review to audience.

Secondly, I like the store of one night, one night that could change Bill’s mind and his worried. The house where he put the mask on, reminded me a lot of alien film because when alien is on the earth, humans think that there are alien. But if human go to their place such as the Mars, I believe human is alien for them. So Bill wasn’t an alien before he removed his mask. It is like you are revealing your secret.
